Change in Tally Licensing Policy — Authorising Virtual Usage
With the advent of virtualisation — Windows RDP, Citrix, thin clients and cloud services — Tally's licensing policy changed to authorise and support virtual usage through a Tally Virtual User pack.
Tally has historically been an on-premise product with one of the simplest licensing policies, intended to make it easy to decide how to integrate Tally into your business.
Over recent years, with the advent of virtualisation and technologies such as Windows RDP, Citrix, Windows Thin Client and cloud services, demand to access the Tally application and other crucial data using such technologies gained momentum.
In response, the licensing policy was changed to authorise and support virtual usage of Tally.ERP 9, operated through a Tally Virtual User (TVU) pack. If you use Windows RDP, cloud services or similar technologies to access Tally.ERP 9 virtually, you need a TVU pack. This change came into effect from 1st July 2020.
Who is a virtual user of Tally?
A Tally Virtual User (TVU) is an instance of Tally.ERP 9 running, or being accessed, over a virtualised environment or through tools such as Windows RDP, Windows Thin Client, Citrix or similar technologies. In simple terms: if you use Windows RDP or a similar technology to reach Tally.ERP 9, you require a licence with a Tally Virtual User entitlement.
Default entitlements
Each Tally licence comes with a default, free, lifetime entitlement of virtual users. A single-user Tally.ERP licence includes one TVU pack; a multi-user licence includes 10 TVU packs.
If you hold a Tally.Server 9 licence, you receive an additional entitlement of 20 TVU packs free — 30 free TVU packs in total, combining 20 from Tally.Server 9 and 10 from the Tally.ERP 9 multi-user licence.
The transition phase
Already using Tally.ERP 9 virtually, via RDP, Citrix or cloud services?
Until 31st March 2021, you could continue to use Tally virtually in the same way as before. During this period, TVU packs were deployed free of cost based on your needs. After the free trial, default entitlements applied. Your Tally partner would get in touch to help with this.
Using Tally.ERP 9, but not virtually?
If you wanted to try virtual usage, your Tally partner would propose and deploy a virtual technology solution with authorised TVU access. TVU authorisation was free until 30th September 2020, after which a one-month free trial applied. The trial could be taken any time up to 31st March 2021, after which default entitlements set in.
Just bought Tally.ERP 9?
Your Tally partner would assess your nature of usage and propose the required implementation, on-premise or virtual. Where virtual usage was recommended, a free trial of authorised TVU access applied until 30th September 2020, and a one-month free trial thereafter.
